八年前，自海军陆战队受训完毕的卡麦伦坡（尼古拉斯凯奇饰）为了保护刚怀孕的妻子免于小混混的骚扰，导致过失杀人被判了十年徒刑。在狱中表现良好的他，终于在女儿八岁生日当天获得假释，卡麦伦坡希望能亲自将生日礼物送到女儿手中，因此要求典狱官让他登上空中监狱，以节省舟车往返的时间。但这踏空中监狱正巧搭载一批全美最残暴凶狠的犯人，准备运送到另一个新落成的高度保全监狱去。 联邦探员（约翰库查克饰）为这踏危险任务准备许久。没想到飞机飞上天没多久，罪犯首领外号‘病毒’的葛森（约翰麦可维奇饰）就策动其他同伙，夺下飞机。联邦调查局在无路可退下，决定打下这架飞机——反正他们都是社会人渣。但意外卷入这场风波的卡麦伦坡又该如何为自己脱险，亲自将礼物送给从未谋面的女儿……
《空中监狱》是奥斯卡影帝尼古拉斯凯奇继去年的《绝地任务》后，又一部大型惊险的动作片。虽然以文艺片《远离赌城》翻红，但他却以动作片奠定一线票房巨星的地位，成为九十年代的新英雄。本片的构想来自编剧Scott Rosenberg亲自搭程过‘空中监狱’，在三天的时间里，他和机上的囚犯横越了数个国家，机上的紧张情绪和戒备森严的状况留给他深刻的印象。 万无一失的‘空中监狱’使运送的犯人根本无机可趁，但Rosenberg还是忍不住问∶囚犯有没有劫机的机会？他得到的回答是∶除非运用你疯狂的想像力。而他真的这么做了！这个题材马上得到《赤色风暴》、《绝地任务》的名制片杰瑞布洛克海默的喜爱，拍成电影在美国上映后，也顺利的登上暑假票房周冠军。
花絮：
·电影的灵感来自于一则讲述运载犯人的飞机的报纸新闻。
·电影主题曲《How Do I Live》在获得奥斯卡最佳原创歌曲奖提名的同时，也被金酸莓提名为最差歌曲，不过最后哪个奖都没得。
·根据Cameron Poe收到的女儿的信，飞机是7月14日起飞的，这天是法国国庆节，攻陷巴士底狱的日子。

【内容简介】

主人公尤瑞在少年时跟随家人从欧洲移居美国。18岁那年，他加入联合国维和部队，作为一名翻译被派往非洲。由于厌恶战争，他对自己所从事的工作毫无兴趣。一个偶然的机会，他把枪支转手倒卖给民间武装军队。并在此期间，遇到了一见钟情的女人—埃娃。回到美国后，尤瑞劝说弟弟维塔利加入了他的军火生意，两人开始靠倒卖地下军火赚钱。但是两大威胁像幽灵一样困扰着尤瑞：他生意上的死对头和杰克—一个对他紧追不放的国际警察。维塔利染上了毒瘾。每每看到弟弟毒瘾发作的样子，尤瑞十分痛心，但是却无能为力。
尤瑞对埃娃一直念念不忘，设法与其见面，并成功地使埃娃爱上了他。尤瑞告诉埃娃，他在从事国际运输的大生意，并且赚了很多钱。两人结婚，并有了一个孩子。在妻儿面前，尤瑞是个完美的家居男人，一心一意地照顾他们，甚至会把儿子房间里的玩具枪拿走，不让他接触到这些暴力的东西。在另一方面，尤瑞的谎言却很难维持下去，为了赚钱，他回到了乌克兰，又开始了他的老本行。和他的叔叔多米崔合伙贩卖军火到非洲有战争的地区，一夜暴富。
国际警察组织逮捕了尤瑞，但由于证据不足，又很快释放了他。埃娃开始对他的生意产生了怀疑，并质问他。尤瑞承认了自己是军火商。为了妻子和这个家，他决心当个做正当生意的商人。在很多尝试不成功后，本性使他回到了老路上。说服弟弟和他一起去非洲谈生意，谁知中途出了乱子，弟弟在他的面前被打死。尤瑞逃过一劫，完成了这笔生意。
弟弟的死对尤瑞触动很大，他开始思考自己所做的事的意义和正确性。回到美国后，父母不肯原谅他，将其逐出家门。埃娃也带着孩子离开了他，并向警方告发他的罪行。
在国际警察的安排下，尤瑞开始为美国工作。但是，此时他已孑然一身。
